With the growing interest in water conservation and the role of reclaimed water systems, CIBSE has produced a new guide that will enable building designers, building operators and developers to understand how such systems work and how they can be specified for particular applications.
Reclaimed Water is a concise, practical guide on the subject in an easy-to-use format. The guide outlines the different systems and techniques available for reclaiming and using rainwater and grey water within the built environment. It also gives an overview of the design approach and a description of how the system can be sized to provide the optimum capacity.
Storage of the water is a critical factor and there is guidance on the different types of storage tank, water treatment and distribution. The final section covers system operation, including controls, water quality and maintenance. A comprehensive list of references and sources is also included for people who require more detailed information.
Within the context of the publication, 'rainwater' is defined as water which falls from the sky, whilst 'grey water' is water that was originally supplied as wholesome water but has been used for certain other applications such as bathing or laundry.
The new guide is the first publication in the CIBSE Knowledge Series, a range of practical guides that will give guidance on some of the key areas within building services.
