Trox UK has manufactured and supplied chilled beams and a range of grilles and diffusers for Phase II of the Citygate project – a prestigious 11,000 sq m multi-storey office development in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne – in a project worth more than £200,000.
More than 500 recessed passive beams were used throughout the building, which has a five-storey wing linked to an eight-storey wing. The beams, that came in five sizes – 1.5m, 2m, 3m, 3.5m, and 4m – were supplied to the site (opposite Newcastle Football Club’s ground, St James’s Park) in a series of eight carefully staggered deliveries.
David Wright, of Sunderland-based consultant Desco, admired Trox’s handling of the complex delivery schedule. He said: “Trox assisted us from day one in terms of technical advice and dimensional details. The original idea was to create an open plan office arrangement, but a number of cellular offices came into being after the original design had been completed that meant that the chilled beam specification had to change. Trox’s flexibility enabled the beams to be called off on a floor-by-floor basis, which minimised redundant kit.”
The Trox beams sit behind a false suspended ceiling on each floor of the Citygate building. The beams have a metal case surrounding the cooling coil with a flexible skirt on the bottom that provides a chimneystack effect, forcing the cooled air downwards into the office space.
