Two major HFC134a based cooling contracts worth over £750,000 have been completed at one the largest office developments in the City of London.
The development, known as Plantation Place, comprises two adjoining buildings and has a net floor area of over 65,000 square metres.
Northumberland based McQuay UK were separately specified for the comfort cooling on both buildings, supplying four centrifugal chillers for Plantation One and two screw chillers for the adjoining Mincing Lane structure, known as Plantation South. The company also won the contract to supply seven new generation Easdale air handling units for the latter building. A feature of all six chillers (centrifugal and screw) is their use of the environmentally friendly refrigerant HFC 134a, which is well known for its zero effect on the ozone layer and lower global warming potential. It is less well known for its lower operating pressure, which has the effect of reducing stress on the major mechanical components and bearings, leading to greater reliability under all conditions. Full modulating control from 100 percent to 10 percent or less is also provided, enabling the chilled water load to be matched.
Each of the centrifugal chillers has a cooling capacity of 1800 kw, with a COP in excess of six, even under part load conditions. Their reliability and low operation and maintenance costs are the other major benefits that helped McQuay win the order.
Of the seven Easdale air handling units supplied to Plantation South, the four largest are each over 10 metres long, with an air volume of 17.3 cubic metres per secon
