CIBSE launches challenge to cut carbon emissions by 60%
Published:  05 November, 2003
Presentation

The first of two student entrants for a competition to reduce carbon emissions at CIBSE’s headquarter by 60% receive their competition entry packs from competition co-ordinator John Field (left) and chief executive Julian Amery (right) at the recent CIBSE/ASHRAE conference in Edinburgh.

A 60% reduction in carbon emissions from its headquarters buildings at Balham in south London is the challenge of a competition launched by CIBSE.

This figure corresponds to the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution’s target reduction. The entire building stock of the UK will have to reach this target if the country is to fulfil its commitments to help reverse climate change.

CIBSE believes that this open competition, which is not restricted to CIBSE members, will provide the winners with a great opportunity to raise their profile in the building-services industry. The winner will be announced and presented with the award at the president’s awards dinner in 2004.

It is planned for the winning submission to be implemented by CIBSE as part of the building refurbishment and should provide an exceptional opportunity for the winners to be involved in one of the first such Carbon 60 projects in the UK.

Information packs for the competition include floor plans marked up with usage areas and equipment, photographs of the headquarters building and a site energy report carried out in 2002 under the Action Energy scheme. The report included brief descriptions of current occupancy and schedules, plant and controls, and operational settings.

Two shortlists of up to four entrants will be chosen, one of which is restricted to full-time students. Shortlisted entrants may visit the site and provide more detailed submissions with refined proposals, savings estimates and costings.

Competition information packs are available from Karen Oritz at kortiz@cibse.org (put carbon 60 in the subject line of the e-mail).
