BEAMA has published its Climate Change White Paper which sets out the opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs in energy networks, buildings and for end-use equipment. The White Paper pinpoints what BEAMA believes industry, Government and stakeholders can do to address some of the headline issues currently preventing many of these carbon savings being made.
BEAMA believes that an industrial policy based on energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions can help companies, their clients and customers alleviate the current economic difficulties in the UK. Established companies in the sector have the opportunity to help their clients and customers reduce their energy usage, and save them money. Investments of this type will allow these companies to maintain healthy markets for their products and services.
BEAMA highlights how a constructive relationship between the industry, the Government and their agencies, could transform the opportunity to reduce carbon emissions. A 30% reduction in losses and waste from the electrical sector, equating to almost 6% of the UK primary energy demand is possible if all measures are adopted.
BEAMA Director, Dr Howard Porter, outlined the White Paper’s objectives – namely to stimulate the electrotechnical industry’s response to climate change of which the key objective is energy efficiency improvement. The association says there are considerable opportunities for reducing energy usage throughout the electricity supply chain and the White Paper emphasises how these can be achieved.
Dr Porter commented: “Our newest initiative echoes current Government thinking, providing strong pointers for manufacturers to differentiate themselves and so give UK businesses a better chance to create opportunities and withstand the economic downturn.
“The challenges posed by climate change-influenced policies have an increasing relevance for BEAMA and its members – business profitability and relationships with their customers.    BEAMA has taken a proactive approach to help the industry meet the challenges and opportunities.
“We have consulted with members and industry stakeholders to develop a perspective for the industry combining its traditional strengths of innovation and safety, with the implications of climate change and increasing fuel costs.
“The key is to create a new dialogue between industry and Government, from which we can develop a genuine partnership to deliver carbon savings. The starting point is an open examination of what both parties can do differently to set a framework for the development and integration of products and technologies that will achieve those carbon and cost savings.
“This document is intended to stimulate those discussions and define the actions required from the electrotechnical industry, and policy makers, to promote long term carbon savings from technology development and deployment.”
The BEAMA Climate Change White Paper has been produced in conjunction with CESA (Catering Equipment Suppliers Association) and LIF (Lighting Industry Federation).
